Hay Day

Each Spring & Summer brings life to Perry Farm, along with a large amount of work. Early summer brings what I refer
to as Hay Day, where I spend the better part of a week, cutting, sweeping, baling and storing hay for our cattle. It’s a lot of hard work and we do it twice a year, but the benefits are phenomenal.

Growing and processing our cattle’s winter feed, allows me to control what they eat and what you eat when you buy our beef. It also helps keep cost down so our prices stay competitive in this market.

So if I seem a little tired this weekend at Josh’s Farmers Market, you’ll know it was Hay Day for a whole week!

Grass Fed Beef & Summer Heat

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Grass Fed Beef enjoy this summer heat wave almost as much as you and I. In fact, the last couple of summer month’s our cattles weight increase is the least of all months. The drop in growth is not substantial, they just don’t eat as much. Just like us, they don’t have as much of an appetite in this heat and humidity.

The summer heat and humidity can quickly become an issue. On the farm, outdoor work is a necessity and being prepared for these summer conditions is important. Just like winter, we put on a coat before we leave the house, in the summer we must also prepare for the outside conditions.

Here are a few things I do and recommend to friends and family:

  1. Hydrate – Water is critical for our bodies to cool itself, drink plenty of water.
  2. Hat – If you must work in the sun, wear a hat to protect your head from sunburn.
  3. Sunscreen – PF 40 is the minimum I use and if I’m vacationing on the beach or lake, I’ll up it to PF 50.
  4. Plan & Prepare – If your work indoors, plan and prepare for your outdoor activity, schedule breaks and bring plenty of water. Don’t overdo it and know your limitations.

Stay Safe & Enjoy the Summer!
